On 21 & 22 September, the International SOS Foundation will be hosting our fifth Duty of Care Summit & Awards. Held in a virtual capacity, the Summit aims to gather global leaders and key decision makers responsible for protecting the health, safety, security and wellbeing of their employees to discuss trends, challenges and share best practices. The Summit is CPD accredited and delegates will be able to register the hours towards their professional development.

Due to the drastic shift COVID-19 has created for global organisations, this year’s event theme encompasses the focus on resilience in light of robust and challenging circumstances - Empowering the Future of Workforce Resilience: Redefining Duty of Care in a COVID-19 World

COVID-19 has sharpened the focus on many issues. Lisa Ali, Chief People and Sustainability Officer for Australia’s largest and the worlds fifth largest gold miner discusses how we can learn from the pandemic and make our businesses more resilient. With operations in Australia, Canada, South America and Papau New Guinea, and an active exploration programme, Lisa talks on how Newcrest managed through the pandemic, kept their people safe, how they are helping indigenous communities learn from the pandemic and what the future of work will look like in a post COVID-19 world.

Preparedness has been a critical learning for many organisations throughout COVID-19. Dr Pasi Penttinen, Principal Expert Coronavirus and Influenza at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), reflects on the impact of COVID-19 over the past 20 months, the initiatives in place to improve global pandemic preparedness and what to expect throughout the rest of 2021.

To better understand the related travel risks in this evolving and complex environment, leading experts from Chubb and CWT discuss how to best approach your return to travel policies and procedures in order to protect your global workforce and maintain business operations.  

Workplace health and wellbeing has taken a well-deserved starring role for organisations and senior leaders alike. Creating a robust, personalised and yet measurable wellbeing programme has become a critical part of organisations Duty of Care obligations. Laura Hauge, Group Safety Manager at Mott MacDonald will discuss how factors such as technology, changing demographics and the pandemic has impacted workplace wellbeing and best practices for protecting the health and wellbeing of your employees.

Nivedita Sen, Health & Healthcare Specialist  and Kelly McCain, Head of Healthcare Initiatives from the World Economic Forum address the significant shift in the role of the Chief Health Officer within organisations and the importance of implementing best-in-class responses to the pandemic to support their global workforce. They will also present the Forum’s brand new C-Suite community of Chief Health Officers aimed to work towards shaping a common leadership vision to support overall employee care and wellbeing, as the future of work continues to change. 

As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout accelerates globally, now, more than ever, employers seek to uphold their Duty of Care obligations to their employees. In this session, Laure de Panafieu, Partner, Head of Employment & Incentives, Asia and Sinead Casey, Employment Partner, Europe at Linklaters will  address the legal implications challenging organisations alongside the recommendations for ensuring a safe and healthy workforce.  

With over 1,700 students, 600 staff and 200 yearly trips taken pre-pandemic, the International School Bangkok (ISB) faced complex safety and safeguarding challenges as COVID-19 progressed. As a previous Duty of Care Awards winner, ISB will share how to best balance reality and risk-mitigation to support students, staff and the wider community throughout heightened risks. Mark Hevland, Director of Risk Management, will discuss the appropriate policies, systems and stakeholder alignment necessary to develop a culture of safety.

As organisations look to open their workplace to employees, ensuring the health and safety upon their return is critical to protecting operational resilience. Dinesh Wadehra, Global Operations Head, will share how Wipro has prepared for a safe return to the office, sharing best practices and tactical insights.

Ahead of the launch of the new ISO 31030 standard - Travel risk management – Guidance for organizations, Kevin Myers ISO Convenor will explain the critical role the new standard will play mitigating the health, safety, security and wellbeing risks to your global workforce.

Adopting the necessary mechanisms to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment, led by your leadership, will not only create a prosperous future for your operations, and reputation but also improve the health and wellbeing of your people. Grant Caplan, President at Procurigence and Chair of the GBTA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Global Committee, shares how to implement a successful diversity, equity and inclusion policy and prgrammes fit for your organisation. 

Technology’s role throughout the pandemic has been fundamental in assuring the health and safety of travellers. With travel playing a critical role in upholding business operations, organisations rely heavily on the end-to-end management of digital health passes and the validation of COVID-19 vaccine certificates. Dr Chester Drum, Co-founder of AOKpass, the world’s most operationally advanced security health certificate platform and app, discusses the critical role digital health passes play in ensuring a safe return to work and the future outlook on travel health certificate platforms. 

COVID-19 has propelled occupational health & safety into a key area of sustainability reporting for any organisations. Karla Guerrero Lozoya, Stakeholder Council Chairwoman, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Louis Wustemann, writer and former editor of Health and Safety at Work and IOSH Magazine, will discuss the principle and recent trends of integrating workforce health & safety management and monitoring into organisations sustainability and/or ESG strategies, supporting the SDG 3 & 8 goals.

The pandemic has heightened the need for organisation-wide preparedness but how do stakeholders respond when needing to manage new crises such as political instability, natural disasters and civil unrest. Compound crises creates an environment where crisis management procedures and mechanisms need to be proactively addressed. International SOS Security Director, Gautier Porot will review how organisations can adopt a crisis management methodology to successfully manage crises. 

For organisations operating in remote or extreme environments, protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of your people can be extremely volatile. Through the pandemic, remote health and Telemedicine have played a critical role in maintaining business operations. Dr Rikard Moen, Chairman of the Faculty of Remote, Rural & Humanitarian Healthcare, and Dr Anthony Renshaw, Reginal Medical Director at International SOS will share what measures organisations must consider to mitigate health and security risks in future. 

The travel security environment post-COVID remains top of mind for those responsible for the health and safety of their travellers. As restrictions lesson in certain locations, Captain Andreas Meyer, Director at the International Business Aviation Council and Hany Bakr, Senior Vice President, Aviation & Martime Security at MedAire will discuss how the travel experience will change, what security measures will be adopted in future, how to prepare travellers as trips restart and how to adapt your travel risk programmes to support the new travel reality.
